INDOOR POTTY TRAINING TIPS

Aren’t we all glad we have indoor plumbing and no longer need an outhouse? Indoor potties are making life with a dog easier for seniors, boaters, campers and busy lifestyles.
Training pads are easy to dispose of and convenient. Newer styles include odor control properties, adhesive strips to help keep them in place plus attractants to encourage dogs to use the designated spot.
Litter boxes and grass-covered pans are also becoming popular solutions for dog owners. Similar to a cat litter box, the dog eliminates in the box which is filled with absorbent litter. The owner scoops the waste and changes the litter as needed. Grass-covered pans, a newer, high-tech style, consist of a tray base that captures the urine, topped with a perforated synthetic grass that is easily cleaned and reused.
INDOOR POTTY TRAINING TIPS:
- Setup a potty area that is convenient for both you and the puppy. The potty spot must be consistent, easy for the puppy to get to, plus feel safe and undisturbed when using. It should also be in an acceptable area for you to live with and maintain.
- Introduce the puppy to the designated potty spot. Show him where he is to go potty, allowing him to sniff and touch, making it a positive experience.
- Feed at the same time every day. Consistent feedings will help you time his potty habits, making training easier.
- Keep a close eye on your puppy. After feeding or coming out of his cage, catch him when he acts like he is about to go potty and direct him to his potty. An unwatched puppy will have more accidents and make potty training more difficult.
- Praise and reward the puppy. Tell him what a good dog he is when he uses his potty. Give him a treat and rub his belly when he uses the potty without being guided there.
- Keep the potty clean. A puppy may look for another spot if the potty is too dirty. A clean fresh potty spot keeps everyone happier.
While outside training is still the norm for most dogs and their owners, an indoor potty may be the answer to allowing a puppy into your life. The staff at ANIMART can help answer any questions you may have on indoor potty puppy training.
