WINTER BIRD TIPS

Unless you have a penguin, your pet bird most likely would feel most at home somewhere warm and tropical. Thanks to our warm modern “nests”, pet birds, too, can enjoy living where it snows! Follow these winter bird tips to keep your pet bird comfortable and healthy while it’s cold outside:

Position the cage away from cold drafts

While your bird may enjoy looking out the window at the snow, doors and windows may expose your bird to unhealthy icy drafts. Move the cage to an inside wall that is also away from any blowing inside heat registers.

Cover the cage at night

As the sun goes down and your nest gets cooler, covering the cage can help maintain an ideal comfort zone and good night’s sleep for your bird.

Beware of smoke and fumes

Fireplaces and space heaters can produce smoke and gas fumes which can be challenging to your bird’s respiratory system, potentially causing illness and death.

Be aware

A cold-stressed bird can lead to a sick bird. Take the proper steps to prevent drafts, keep your bird warm and comfortable, monitor your bird for early signs of illness and before you know it, it will be spring!
